The Catwalk, officially Jager`s Walk, running from Fish Hoek`s main beach up to Sunnycove, was damaged during a combination of a storm and a Spring tide in September 2008. Large chunks were taken away and on some places, it is not all that safe.
At the moment there are fences up on the walk, which are meant to prevent people from using it, but as is often found, these fences are torn down, as not too many people are all that happy with both the fences and the delays. Both locals and visitors are still using the walk, and climbing around / over these fences. Hence, "the obstacle walk".
The municipality has had maintenance people look at it, and currently they are looking at starting repairs in June or July, when the beaches are quieter, as it is winter at that time of the year.
Will keep yous posted regarding status--let`s hope, that our council do not find too many "obstacles" in their attempts to get the situation fixed and it will be sorted out by December so that both the locals and visitors can once again enjoy full use of this scenic walk again.

Right on Gerallt - here's hoping and with fingers crossed that it will be June or July 2009.
ReplyDeleteI think maybe the community needs to become more actively engaged in this process: now that the elections are behind us and Helen is to be our premier, we should lobby her on a regular basis not only to point out that the middle of winter is not the best time to be pouring concrete but also to establish whether the R1.5million budgetted for this project is sufficient to return it to its original condition whilst, at the same time, considering whether that wouldn't be pouring good money after bad. Maybe the catwalk needs an entirely new look altogether as it's hardly user friendly: pushing a pram or wheelchair along it is very difficult. And the original surface was so rough that I've seen several people trip; I've probably tripped myself. The catwalk definitely deserves a song and dance made about it. Gillian Brooke
